Synopsis

What holds a family together? Is it money, family values, crisis or simply pure love?

In this heart-warming comedy, three squabbling siblings are forced to unite when an outsider tries to lay claim on their father's business inheritance; a mother worries that her family is falling apart when her daughters adopt different family values; and a daughter while struggling with her mother's dementia, gets a shocking revelation about her family. I may not be American, but it doesn't make me any less elated to know that Obama has clinched the presidency. And the fact that Obama is America's first black president makes it all the more sensational... Could there ever be a Latin American president in the future? Perhaps even a Chinese American one? Boy... that'd be the day... Anyway, this has to be perhaps the single most significant political event for my generation. I only started becoming interested in Obama's campaign when he fought against Hillary Clinton to become the Democrat nominee... and since then, I have been enthralled by this enigmatic man. He has brought the message of change not only to the Americans, but also to the entire world. I'm anticipating eagerly the changes he promised... and hopefully somewhere in the future, we can all look back and say yes.... we made the right choice in him. These are truly exciting times...

My Chinese pride...

I was never a fan of the Olympic Games until it finally made its stop in Beijing. Frankly, I'm never a fan of sports, but somehow this year's games managed to keep me captivated, notably track and field, gymastics (eyecandies everywhere!) and swimming (simply exciting to see that green line chasing those swimmers everytime... hehe...). So it was a bittersweet feeling to know that it all ends today. I don't know why, but watching the Beijing Olympics closing ceremony earlier on TV actually made me emotional. It was heartwarming to see those Chinese performers giving their heart and soul to the performance, and what a spectacular performance it was! The Chinese people sure know how to party... and they certainly have every right to. From their 50 gold medal winnings, to the mammoth Olympic structures that they built, and right down to their impeccable organisation of the Games, China has finally shown the world what it is truly capable of. And even though I'm not from China, being Chinese however, is reason enough to make me feel proud. And proud I am to be Chinese. Somehow, I think a part of me will always look to China as the motherland...

Going For Our Vacation

When asked what a vacation is, many say it is a gateway to release stress and to compose a person. But what happens when we return from our vacation, we end up in the same pile of mess that we actually ran away from. Eventually, a vacation becomes a couple of days of gateway with the existing problems still floating around in our minds.

A certain kind of miscommunication or a certain irresolvable issue during a particular time is usually called a problem. When problems are unresolved or ignored it starts to grow in an accelerating speed. Everything around you will seem troubled and life would be more miserable. The solution is to simply face the problem no matter in whatever shape or size it tends to be. The solution seems easy, but to execute it, it takes a lot of courage.

A vacation usually has a route, but a couple of people will come across signs. Emotions are going to run wild, secrets and problems between one another are going to be exposed. Strangers will become friends and friends, will turn to foes. Will this vacation solve all their problems?

A collage of voices and movements takes you on a journey through hope and helplessness. This theatre production fuses creativity and sensitivity into our increasingly complex society, which will instigate our minds to start wondering what is wrong and what is right.

To the Straits Times yet again!

Here I go again blasting to the Straits Times Forum. Let's just hope my letters get published. But even if they don't, at least you get to read them here.

Letter #1: Is NEA all bark and no bite?

It has been two years since the smoking ban was implemented, but it would seem that smokers still continue to light up in public places, much to the annoyance of us non-smokers. On many occasions, I have spotted smokers lighting up in bus stops and hawker centres. Just today, I was having my dinner at a hawker centre situated along Keong Siak Road. Halfway through my dinner, I was overwhelmed by a cloud of cigarette smoke coming from the table beside mine. To my horror, there were four men smoking at that particular table and the ironic part of it was that there was a huge "no smoking" sign just beside the table. Despite the availability of tables inside the designated yellow box for smokers, these smokers had shown utter disrepect to the other diners at the hawker centre. At first, I thought it was only this group of smokers who were flouting the law. However, when I glanced around, I realised that there were more smokers at the other tables. Even one of the hawkers was smoking right in front of his stall! All of them were clearly unafraid of being fined for flouting the rules. I would like to ask NEA if it conducts regular checks to ensure that the smoking ban is being upheld or has NEA gone soft over the past two years?

Letter #2: Slow Down the Pace!

I would like to point out to LTA that there are a few traffic lights that needs to be tweaked to a much slower pace for the benefit of all pedestrians. These traffic lights include the one located at the junction between Orchard MRT and Wheelock Place and another one located between Pearl Centre and Layor Sithi Vinayagar Temple. The timing to cross the roads at these traffic lights are simply insufficient for pedestrians. I understand that the fast traffic timing is to ensure that vehicles do not get held up, but it fails to take into consideration the pedestrians. The timing at these traffic lights are just about nice for me but that is only because I walk at a fast pace. Sometimes, when the pedestrian crowd gets too large (especially at the one at Orchard) and I am reduced to a snail pace, I can barely make it in time to finish crossing the road before the lights turn red again. So I can only imagine, if a young and healthy man like me is finding it hard to cross a road, how would the pregnant, old and disabled pedestrians feel? I sincerely hope LTA can do something about this and make the green man walk longer.

Pain! Pain!

Been sick since Sunday when I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible stomachache. I could hardly sleep that night and all I could do was wince in pain. When I woke up the next day, I felt even weaker. I figured it must have been food poisoning since I had sushi at Sakae for dinner the night before. Anyway, the fever that I got yesterday has subsided and I'm feeling better already, except for the persistent abdominal pain that i'm having. It has dulled significantly since the first attack on Sunday but it's still there nonetheless. I was surfing the internet earlier looking for a likely diagnosis and the closest possibility that I could come up with was Appendicitis. Symptoms of Appendicitis include nausea (checked), low grade fever (checked), diarrhea (checked), loss of appetite (while I did lose my appetite when I was fevering, I seem to have gotten back my appetite already. Actually, talking about appetite, I am getting a little hungry... hehe....), and an aching pain that starts from the navel to the lower right abdomen. I can't exactly pinpoint that pain but it sure has shifted and my right abdomen does feel kind of sore... though it could just be psychological. Reading on, it says that the pain usually intensifies within 6 - 12 hours and would eventually become very severe. But the fact that I'm able to blog about this probably goes to show I'm not in pain... though it does hurt when I move about too much... Almost died of pain when I walked down to have my dinner earlier... Heh... In any case, if I do indeed have appendicitis, it would seem that I require emergency surgery since if left untreated, my stomach would explode or something... Now, that'd be a sight to behold. Heh... the thought of going through surgery is daunting because that would mean my body would be scarred for life! ARGGGHHH!!!! If there's one thing I'm proud of myself all this while, is that I've always had nice skin! No scars, no blemishes, nothing on my body! So the thought of having one small scar there is unimaginable!! NNNOOOOOOOOO!!! Maybe I'm just thinking too much... Geez, I can be such a pessimist! Positive thoughts! Oommmm...

One thing I like about living in Chinatown is that there is always something interesting to see everyday. Just today, I spotted this very old man (mid 80s I presume?) strolling very slowly along the busy streets of Chinatown. Frankly speaking, old men are a dime a dozen over here in Chinatown, but what really caught my eyes was that this particular old man was dressed up like a typical Victorian. He was actually wearing the signature yellow Victorian PT shirt right down to the brown khaki pants. I immediately wondered if he was really an actual Victorian... hmmm... make that a VERY old Victorian (or perhaps he stole his grandson's uniform?). And if he really was a Victorian, why would he be wearing the Victoria uniform right smack in the middle of Chinatown? Was it because he was feeling extremely nostalgic? Was he feeling the Victorian Spirit? Hmmm... Anyway, looking at that uniform shall brings back nostalgic memories... Maybe I should go dig in my closet check and see if I still fit into those brown khaki pants... Hee...
